100 years of tradition and quality ... The Original English Wax Jacket. It's nice to know some things never change.

The first wax coat was worn more than a hundred years ago in England. Favored by landsmen and hunters, Royals and peasants, this legendary jacket has become renowned the world over, not least for it's practical qualities giving you excellent protection from the elements.

The History Behind

Early sailors noticed that wet sails were more efficient than dry sails because wet cotton is windproof, but they also noticed that wet sails were very heavy and slowed the vessel down. In the Middle Ages, they started to apply fish oils and grease to the sailcloth in order to make the sails windproof, and also to stop the rain and spray soaking the sails and stopping them getting too heavy. They used sailcloth to make waterproof capes for themselves to keep them dry. The result was more efficient sails in dry weather (being windproof), lighter sails in wet weather (not getting waterlogged), and drier sailors.

Making it a Classic

Eventually, that material evolved into the modern wax cotton material. Theoretically, it should have died out as more modern waterproof materials emerged, but it survived in two areas — farming and motorcycling — because of its sheer toughness. Farmers loved it because it lasts forever and they can reproof it, and you can walk through woods and bushes in it without it being ripped to shreds. Motorcyclists also loved its toughness.

This small, forgotten material’s history completely changed one day in the 1980’s when Princess Diana was photographed wearing one and it appeared on the cover of French Vogue. You know the rest.
